Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comment form, along with the visitor's IP address and browser user agent string, to help with spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (a "hash") may be shared with the Gravatar service to check whether you have an account there. You can read Gravatar's privacy policy at automattic.com/privacy. Once a comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside it.

Media

If you upload images to the site, avoid uploading images that include embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the site can download and extract location data from any images published on it.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to having your name, email address and website saved in a cookie, purely for your convenience so you don't need to re-enter those details next time. These cookies last for one year.

If you visit our login page, a temporary cookie is set to check whether your browser accepts cookies. It holds no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we also set cookies to save your login information and screen display choices. Login cookies last two days, and screen-option cookies last a year. Selecting "Remember Me" extends your login for two weeks. Logging out removes your login cookies.

Editing or publishing an article saves one further cookie, containing no personal data — just the ID of the post you edited. It expires after a day.

Embedded Content

Pages on this site may include embedded content — videos, images or articles, for example. Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you'd visited that website directly.

Those websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that content — including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that site.

Who We Share Your Data With

If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email.

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely, so that any follow-up comments from you can be recognised and approved automatically rather than held in a moderation queue.

For any users who register on the site, we also store the personal information provided in their profile. Users can see, edit or delete that information at any time, except their username. Site administrators can also see and edit that information.

Your Rights Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including anything you've provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you — with the exception of data we're required to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service.
